Miss Beth, John Lennon and the Beatles

(and a bit of drama from eleni)

Miss Beth would never look you in the eyes. Some say it was because she was shy but most said it was because she was crazy (I think it was actually a physical problem). Some called her a robot but most called her (and still do as I've been informed by my cousin) "Beth Death". That doesn't matter though because I may not have realized it at the time, but Miss Beth was the one responsible for my first introduction to the Beatles. It was the last day before Christmas holidays and Miss Beth had brought a tape and a bunch of papers into class. The tape; it was "Happy X-Mas (war is over)" by Yoko Ono and John Lennon and the bunch of papers; they had a type of quiz where we'd have to listen carefully to the song and fill in the gaps. It looked something like this:

"So this is Christmas.........................another year over......................and so this is Christmas......................."

We laughed, a lot. It was the 9th grade. Later on though, a few years after, I was to discover the marvel that was John Lennon and the Beatles. Happy, totally go-lucky music sing-along's is what their music is to me, meaningful and inspiring is what it is to others. Sure their music is out of our times but if children are going to learn about the fall of tsardom in Russia (ok that was only me and any other idiot who picked history high level) or the period of renaissance and the baroque then they should definitely be introduced to the Beatles because it isn't something you can just find out about yourself anymore. Today's the day any member of the younger generations will hear about the Beatles through a reality show, SuperIdol, where a middle aged man claims he translates and remakes the Beatles songs. And people will laugh, because there's a middle-aged man on TV singing "with a love like that you know you should be glad" in Greek. And that's how they know about the Beatles.
Sure we look into the present and future but you can't leave a whole generation of creation behind.
So Miss Beth, wherever you are, play that funky music white girl!
(this is pointless by the way!)
